Remember when you were a kid and you would run like the wind just because it was fun? Hair flying in the breeze, legs pumping, heart racing and a smile from ear to ear. There was no need to explain or justify why you did it, no need to track progress or follow training plans. You moved because it felt good and the freedom of movement was fun. That was when you didn’t have a care in the world.

Somehow as adults we manage to lose our thrill of movement. We worry about how we look, whether we are good at the activity & whether we are making progress fast enough. At this point, exercise becomes a burden. Exercise is just another item to drop off the bottom of our daily to-do list. If we are really honest, we never planned to do it anyway but felt like it should get put on the list (and we secretly give ourselves points for writing it on there in the first place!)

So what do we do? Well one thing we know for sure at Healthy Family Expo is that small steps matter and they add up over time. This is why we like to talk about small steps & simple solutions. The kernel at the centre of this hard to crack nut is this : Fun is the way to lasting health & fitness.

Sounds too simple right?  But think about it, we will always choose fun over work, fun over lists, fun over chores. When movement is fun it jumps the line on the to-do list!

No more saying “I have to go workout”, “I have to start a diet”, “You have to go get exercise” or “I’m just too tired to even bother”. Now it becomes “We get to do this” “We feel great” and “We want more”. I can hear you saying “that sounds great but how do I even start? … We can’t get there from here!” Well… what you need is a program that guides you step by step as a family.

MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!) is a free 10 week family-based education program available across British Columbia that’s designed to help children and their families get fitter, healthier and happier together. The program facilitates safe, effective and long-lasting changes by improving children’s physical activity levels, nutrition and self-esteem. Families take part in fun 2-hour sessions twice a week for 10 weeks that combine active living (physical exercise), healthy eating and behaviour change.

What can you expect?
• Families learn how to make healthier choices and get active together
• Children become fitter and healthier
• Children are able to concentrate better at school
• Children find new friends and parents find a support network to keep them motivated

Side effects may include:
• Laughter as a family
• Less screen time for kids
• Requests for vegetables
• Lifetime fitness
• Less short tempers & more socializing

  1. I love that it combines active living (physical exercise), healthy eating and behaviour change. Most programs only focus on one.

  2. Wow, I can’t believe this is free – how wonderful! That’s my favourite aspect, because a fee may prevent some families from taking part – I love that $, or lack of, would not be a prohibitive factor in getting families fit and healthy. There is really no reason all families shouldn’t take part in this!

  3. I love that this is a way to work together as a family to get fit, healthy, and have great nutrition! Power in numbers!

  4. I have a friend who did the program and she said it was a great way to start carving out time to spend together as a family, and once they did, it was easier to leave those nights ‘booked’ as family nights for doing fun stuff together.

  5. I love that this program offers a holistic family centered approach to fitness and health. Life is busy and anything that makes being healthy as a family easier us awesome.

  6. I love how this involves the whole family to get healthy and fit together. It’s really important for parents to set the example and join in.

  7. My favorite part of the program is the philosophy to be embraced: When movement is fun it jumps the line on the to-do list! It makes perfect common sense and it’s so easy to do and implement right away with the whole family and friends too.

  8. It’s such a great concept as it’s hard to find ways for the entire family to be active together especially as a lot of kids would rather watch tv than go for a bike ride.

  9. I attended mend for small kids with my daughter in Edmonton 3 yr ago. I really like their way to introduce healthy foods to kids and off course their exercises
