Remember when you were a kid and you would run like the wind just because it was fun? Hair flying in the breeze, legs pumping, heart racing and a smile from ear to ear. There was no need to explain or justify why you did it, no need to track progress or follow training plans. You moved because it felt good and the freedom of movement was fun. That was when you didn’t have a care in the world.
Somehow as adults we manage to lose our thrill of movement. We worry about how we look, whether we are good at the activity & whether we are making progress fast enough. At this point, exercise becomes a burden. Exercise is just another item to drop off the bottom of our daily to-do list. If we are really honest, we never planned to do it anyway but felt like it should get put on the list (and we secretly give ourselves points for writing it on there in the first place!)
So what do we do? Well one thing we know for sure at Healthy Family Expo is that small steps matter and they add up over time. This is why we like to talk about small steps & simple solutions. The kernel at the centre of this hard to crack nut is this : Fun is the way to lasting health & fitness.
Sounds too simple right? But think about it, we will always choose fun over work, fun over lists, fun over chores. When movement is fun it jumps the line on the to-do list!
No more saying “I have to go workout”, “I have to start a diet”, “You have to go get exercise” or “I’m just too tired to even bother”. Now it becomes “We get to do this” “We feel great” and “We want more”. I can hear you saying “that sounds great but how do I even start? … We can’t get there from here!” Well… what you need is a program that guides you step by step as a family.
MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!) is a free 10 week family-based education program available across British Columbia that’s designed to help children and their families get fitter, healthier and happier together. The program facilitates safe, effective and long-lasting changes by improving children’s physical activity levels, nutrition and self-esteem. Families take part in fun 2-hour sessions twice a week for 10 weeks that combine active living (physical exercise), healthy eating and behaviour change.
What can you expect?
• Families learn how to make healthier choices and get active together
• Children become fitter and healthier
• Children are able to concentrate better at school
• Children find new friends and parents find a support network to keep them motivated
