The key to digestive health is to “take care of your gut and it will take care of you”.

You may have heard a lot lately on the idea of maintaining good gut health. That’s not surprising since it’s thought that 80% of our immune system is in our gut.

As busy parents we are constantly on the look out for simple ways to help our families ward off the hundreds of bugs that come our way – and fermented foods are a great place to start.

Where can you find wonder foods like these? Right at your local grocery store!

We recently had the chance to try the Grimm’s Fine Foods range of naturally fermented pickles, sauerkraut, & kimchi. What an amazing discovery! But don’t be fooled – not all sauerkraut and pickles are created equal. Very often they are made quickly with vinegar which does not produce the beneficial bacteria.

The lacto-fermentation used by Grimm’s is an age-old process of natural preservation. It was used thousands of years before refrigeration. Foods rich in lactobacillus are full of probiotic bacteria that promote good gut flora and contribute to overall digestive health. They are also high in vitamins B6, B12, K2 & dietary fibre.

Here are our four favourite ways to enjoy the amazing taste of fermented products from Grimm’s Fine Foods:

Eat it Straight Up
with Crackers or Veggies!

Since my family frowns on me eating straight out of the jar, the Black Garlic Kimchi is absolutely amazing on crackers with fruit veggies and a piece of cheese! The perfect lunch!

Tuck a Tummy-Friendly
Tuna Sandwich into a Lunch Box!

The perfect tuna sandwich is creamy but has a crunch and a slight tang. We love to mix tuna with finely chopped Grimm’s naturally fermented pickles with a little bit of organic mayonnaise. Yum!

Pulled Pork Sandwiches
with Curry Sauerkraut

This is a great family meal that is quick to prep in the slow cooker. So easy that our little guy is in charge of making this one! Add 1 pork tenderloin, 1/2 a can of natural ginger ale, 1/2 cup of low sugar BBQ sauce, 1/4 cup of cilantro and a pinch of sea salt to a slow cooker and let simmer for 6 hrs on low or 3 1/2 hours on high. Pull apart with 2 forks and hold in the juice until serving on  whole grain rolls with sauerkraut & this clean apple vinegar coleslaw.

Move Over Salsa
– Kimchi is in the House!

Black Garlic Kimchi and chips is our favourite new satisfying afternoon or evening snack. Just pour a bowl of Kimchi , add a good handful of non-gmo tortilla chips and Voila! Ready for movie night, the big game on tv, you name it!

Not only are these foods delicious and nutritious, but they are deeply satisfying and high in dietary fibre, which means they help to keep our hunger at bay.
